The Truth About Drinking in the Trades

Let’s just say it straight.

Drinking is part of the culture in the trades.

Long day. Hard work. Beat up body.
Crack one open. Take the edge off.

Nobody questions it.

In fact, if you don’t drink, you’re the odd one out.

How It Starts

For most of us, it doesn’t start as a problem.

It starts as:

  • A couple drinks after work
  • Something on the weekends
  • A way to relax

And for a while, that’s all it is.

When It Changes

Then one day, it’s not just something you do…

It’s something you look forward to all day.

Then it becomes something you feel like you need.

That’s where the shift happens.

And most people don’t even notice it.

The Lie We Tell Ourselves

“I got it under control.”

We all say it.

Because we’re still going to work.
Still paying bills.
Still showing up.

So it can’t be that bad… right?

But control isn’t about whether you can function.

It’s about whether you can stop.

What It Really Costs

Drinking doesn’t always wreck your life overnight.

It’s slower than that.

  • Less energy
  • Shorter patience
  • Poor decisions
  • Health starting to slip

You don’t notice it all at once.

But it adds up.

My Reality

I’ve been there.

What started as occasional turned into daily.

Stronger stuff. More often.

And even when I cut back, I was still holding onto it.

Telling myself it wasn’t that bad anymore.

But the truth is — if it still has a hold on you, it’s still a problem.

What I’m Doing Now

I’m not pretending it’s easy.

But I’m making a decision to take control back.

Cutting it down. Phasing it out. Replacing it with better habits.

Not perfectly.

But consistently.
