The Lie of “I Got It Under Control”

There’s a phrase I’ve said more times than I can count.

“I got it under control.”

If you’ve been around the trades long enough… you’ve heard it too.

Maybe you’ve said it.

What We Really Mean

When we say that, what we really mean is:

  • “I’m still going to work.”
  • “I’m still handling my responsibilities.”
  • “Nothing has completely fallen apart yet.”

So we convince ourselves everything is fine.

The Problem With That Thinking

Control isn’t about holding things together.

Control is about having the ability to stop.

At any time.

Without a fight.

Without excuses.

Without needing it.

The Gray Area

Most people don’t hit rock bottom.

They live in the middle.

Not great.

Not terrible.

Just… stuck.

That’s the dangerous place.

Because it doesn’t force change.

My Experience

I wasn’t falling apart.

I was still working. Still showing up.

From the outside, everything looked fine.

But inside, I knew.

I was relying on something I didn’t need before.

And that’s when it hit me…

That’s not control.

The Honest Question

Ask yourself this:

If you had to stop today…

Could you?

No negotiating. No “just one more.” No tapering.

Just stop.

Your answer will tell you everything you need to know.

Taking It Back

Control isn’t something you say.

It’s something you prove.

And the only way to prove it…

Is to take it back.

Final Thought

We don’t lose control all at once.

We give it up slowly.

And we can take it back the same way.

One decision at a time.

Not medical advice. Just real-life experience from someone working through it.
